Most of us have a great deal of experience with the formation of optical images: they can be formed by flat or curved mirrors, water surfaces, movie projectors, telescopes, and many other devices. Measure the distances d and h. Arrange the geometry so that d/h is about 3/4 — this value is not critical. Replace the filled tank with the empty one, carefully positioning it in the location determined by the masking tape. Without moving the laser, locate the point on Lab 6 - Optics Introduction Geometric optics is one of the oldest branches of physics, dealing with the laws of reflection and refraction.

Use the +25 mm lens as the eye lens and the +100 mm lens as the objective. Place the lenses near one end of the optical bench and the screen at the other end, as shown below. Tape a piece of graph paper to the screen. (Graph paper and tape are in the lab room.) Look through the eye lens, and focus the image of the graph paper by moving the objective.

Take some time and familiarize yourself with the simulation. You are able to move the object and the lens and change the characteristics of the lens. During this lab, be sure to always anchor your image on the principal axis. The pencil’s eraser works well for this.

P31220 Lab 1 Geometric Optics Purpose: Students will learn about refraction, lenses, and mirrors. Introduction: Few things are as basic as vision. If you are planning to go into a veterinary or medical field, you might be helping patients with eye problems. If not, maybe you just want to know a little more about your own eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Lab #1: Geometric Optics I. Introduction In geometric optics, the ray approximation is combined with the laws of reflection and refraction and geometry to determine the location and size of an image formed by a reflecting or refracting surface. This approach can be applied to (i) single surfaces, such as mirrors, (ii) multiple surfaces, Geometric Optics Lab Table 2: Converging Reflecting Surface Position of Object Beyond 2f (cm) At 2f (cm) Between 2f and f (cm) At f (cm) Between f and mirror (cm) d o d i h o h i Image: real, none, or virtual Image: inverted or upright Here image distance from reflecting surface is - d i (cm) and height of image is h i (cm).
