He hits the ball out of the park three times. First, by the subject itself; the incredible planning and carrying out of the train robbery. This was not a casual event. The second book in a book is how well he makes the various characters come alive in these pages. This attitude was clearly prevalent in 1855, for The Great Train Robbery was not only shocking and appalling, but also "daring," "audacious," and "masterful." We share with the Victorians another attitude--- a belief in a "criminal class," by which we mean a subculture of professional criminals who make their living by breaking the laws of the society around them. Michael Crichton may be long gone but his books still grab you.
